Squirrel problem?

i live in an area just outside of a city in a small apartment building. it's not hardcore concrete jungle, but space is tight. because the building is small, everybody has to take care of their own garbage - put it in the cans, take it to the curb, etc. my neighbors have been foreigners and college students who don't seem to take care of their garbage, and as a result we have a HUGE squirrel problem!

we just have the regular garbage cans that you would buy at any home store. they used to have lids, but over time they get lost - mine blew away in a wind storm. even when we had the lids, the squirrels chewed right through them! they chewed through the bottom of the cans when they got trapped. i've looked outside my window and seen a squirrel eating fried chicken and whole pieces of pizza. every day i hear them digging in the cans.

i know that they have learned they will get food here, but is there anything i can do to get rid of them? they are driving me nuts! (pardon the pun)Squirrel problem?
Go old school with metal garbage cans!

and encourage your neighbor to do the same, if your having a problem with the lids then go to your local hardware store and buy a small chain and chain down the lids

if your squirrels can chew through those then you have a bigger problem on your hands!Squirrel problem?
even if you drive em away the rats will come. whtcha gonn ado when they come for you?the squirrels are cuter and they dont litter. feed wild animals and polar bears. at least they will live so what if off the garbage
Not really, sorry. They are very good at adaption. Even if you could catch all the squirrels, more will come and take their place.

This might be a city rodent control issue, and they will enforce the garbage situation.
