Problem with our new squirrel?

We have just got a new squirrel. The problem is that the squirrel looks so afraid, and when we tried to get him out of his cage to play he kept holding to the cage. I know this is not normal for squirrel because they are friendly and he is not eating too. What can be the problem? His new surroundings?Problem with our new squirrel?
Don't you know it is against the law to keep squirrels as pets? Do you have a permit to keep them? As with all wild animals they should never be kept as a pet.Problem with our new squirrel?
I didn't think you were aloud to have squirrels as pets. He is scared, I'm guessing...
Yes, he could be very frightened. Do you know his age? What breed of squirrel is he? That would be helpful information.

You could try putting a light colored, cotton sheet over his cage to give him a bit of privacy. They also like a hammock, tie a pillow case to the roof of the cage, or roll up a small towel that he can hide under. That may help.

When feeding, use a dish he'd not be able to chew, something glass or metal, any plastic will end up chewed to bits. Start slowly, and allow him time to get used to your presence. Speak quietly and move slowly as to not increase his fright. If too stressed, he could die of fright.
